The Northern Shoveler is easily recognized by its oversized, spatula-shaped bill, which features specialized comb-like structures called lamellae used to filter tiny crustaceans and seeds from the water. While they are common across the Northern Hemisphere, collectors and birders particularly prize them for the iridescent green plumage of the drakes and their distinct, broad-winged silhouette in flight.
